Makers in the Zone

The Balboa Fun Zone is hosting Makers in the Zone through Thursday, September 22nd. Makers in the Zone takes place the 4th Thursday of each month. Makers in the Zone brings together local artists, designers, and creators.  There is great of food, drinks, and live music for goers to enjoy.  The event is open from 5pm to 9pm. This will be the last Makers event of the season.  The event is free to attend. The Balboa Fun Zone is located at 600 East Bay Avenue in Newport Beach. Corona del Mar is a part of the city of Newport Beach. Bonsai Workshop hosted by the Orange Empire Bonsai Society

Sherman Library and Gardens is hosting a Bonsai Workshop on August 6th.  The workshop begins at 9am and continues until 12 noon. Join Jorge Perez and Debra Mauzy-Melitz from the Orange Empire Bonsai Society will teach you how to create a traditional Japanese three-point display. Participants will plant and style a cork-bark Portulacaria afra, assemble a mini-Saikei (a mixture of rocks, trees, small plants, and mosses) and finally paint a complimentary scroll featuring morning glory. Morning Glory is the Japanese plant for August. You will be able to take all three pieces home with you to create a summer bonsai display. During the workshop, the instructors will discuss the “rules” of a Japanese seasonal display. The class is $100 for members and $110 for non-members. The Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Chamber BBQ by the Lake this month. The Chamber BBQ will feature Cigars and Scotch. Bring your own cigars and sample scotch. Meet the Hummingbird Experts

Roger’s Gardens is hosting a Meet the Hummingbird Experts from the National Audubon Society session. Hummingbird experts from the Sea and Sage Chapter from the National Audubon Society will be on hand to answer all your questions from 9am to 5pm on Saturday, July 16th. They will be discussing the best plants for hummingbirds, pollinators, and other wildlife. There will have examples of hummingbird nests for you to observe. There will lots of information on creating your own hummingbird garden.  During Hummingbird Summer at Roger’s Gardens, all round up donations will help support the Sea and Sage Audubon Society. 42nd Annual Baroque Music Festival

The 42nd Annual Baroque Music Festival is being held from Sunday, June 19th through Sunday, June 26th. This year the festival is title “Resounding.” The music festival is being held at St. Mark Presbyterian Church. The Baroque Music Festival has been held since 1981. Baroque Music is music composed between 1600 and 1750. There will be five concerts over eight nights. One concert will even be held at Sherman Gardens in Corona del Mar. Concerts begin at 4pm. 2022 Newport Beach Jazz Festival

The Subaru Newport Beach Jazz Festival will be taking place June 3rd through June 5th.  The Newport Beach Jazz Festival will be held at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach. Among the featured performers this year will be CeeLo Green, Brian Culbertson, Brain McKnight and many more. The festival kicks off Friday Night with a VIP concert featuring Marion Meadows and Alex Bugnon. Hyatt’s intimate Back Bay Amphitheatre has 1,000 seats and all are within 100 feet of the stage. On Saturday and Sunday, the festival will he held on the Back Bay Golf Course with 20 different performances on alternating stages. Sherman Library and Gardens Lunch and Lecture Series

The next installment of the Sherman Library and Garden Lunch and Lecture series will take place on Wednesday, April 13th, 2022. This month’s topic is Going Wild on the Urban Edge with speaker Mary Forgione, who is editor of the LA Times outdoors newsletter The Wild. In the LA metro area, you can hike in a forest or desert but you can also stroll through Wilshire Boulevard or go bird watching in the wetlands of South Central. Mary will discuss how we can expand our sense of nature, including right in our own backyards. Lunch will begin at 11:30am and the lecture will begin at noon. Monarchs and Milkweeds Lecture and Lunch

The Sherman Library and Gardens is having the next installment of their lunch and lecture series on Wednesday, March 9th. Roger’s Gardens’ Ron Vanderhoff will present Monarchs and Milkweeds: What Gardeners Need to Know. Ron will discuss the life cycle, history, and current status of the Monarch butterfly in California. He will include reasons for their decline and how to help their number recover. Milkweed is favorite of the Monarch Butterfly; Ron will discuss ways to include this plant in Orange County gardens.  Lunch will be served at 11:30am and the lecture will begin at 12noon. Joyful Flowers at Sherman Gardens

The Sherman Library and Garden is hosting Joyful Flowers, an Ikebana Floral Design Show. The Ikebana Show will be held on March 5th.  Ikebana is the art of Japanese flower arranging using balance, harmony, and form. In Ikebana, you will see all parts of the plant used, flowers, branches, and leaves. You will see floral arrangements designed and arranged by the teachers at The Ikebana Sangetsu West Coast and Ikebana Lessons Groups. The show is free to attend with general admission. On both March 5th and March 6th at 11:30am, there will be an Ikebana demonstration where you will learn more about the history of this art form and how to make a simple design. The topic will be Mother Nature’s Gardens: Wild Plant Communities and Landscape Designs. Kyle Cheesborough is the new Horticulture Director of Sherman Library and Gardens. The lecture will focus on natural and native landscape choices that provide long lasting, sustainable, and beautiful gardens to the landscape.
